Natural Fiber Papers from China

Xuan is a traditional Chinese paper celebrated for its exceptional ink absorption, smooth texture, and durability. Made primarily from high-quality Pteroceltis bark, wingceltis bark, rice-straw and mulberry, each sheet is meticulously made by hand with a process of over 100 steps that include non-destructively harvesting the tree bark, washing, pulping and drying. This process can take up to two years and the techniques are orally passed down from generation to generation.

Also known as Shuen or Shuxuan, Xuan paper originated in ancient China during the Tang Dynasty and is named after the town of Xuancheng in Jing County, Anhui Province. During this time, Xuan paper was used for calligraphy, painting and official documents. It was also use for book printing which was so prized that the books were listed as tribute to the imperial court.

Xuan paper is very soft yet remarkably strong and resists tearing, warping and aging. Its natural fibers ensure archival longevity with resistance to yellowing. These characteristics make Xuan paper ideal for museum-quality artwork and fine art. This premium paper is ideal for traditional Chinese painting, calligraphy, sumi-e and brush lettering. Xuan paper is also used for block printing, book binding and any project requiring a luxury art paper.
